At the beginning of the summer of 2022, many Ukrainians who were forced to leave their homes and country due to the military aggression of the Russian Federation begin to return home. And along the way, they face such problems as how and where they can go. If you have a valid biometric passport, you can easily use visa-free travel between Ukraine and the EU. In this case, you should take into account the rules for the stay of Ukrainians within the EU. So, if you have not received any residence permit document and have not legalized your stay in the EU, you can stay in the EU up to 90 days within 6 months. If you have received documents, such as temporary protection, then the permitted period of stay in the country where you received such protection is indicated on the corresponding document. It should be noted that obtaining temporary protection in any EU country does not affect your right to travel. If you have a valid biometric passport, you can travel from Bulgaria to any other EU country and stay there for 90 days within 180 days.

If you want to return to Ukraine, you are able to return to Ukraine through Romania. Citizens of Ukraine who left Ukraine after February 24, 2022 and who wish to return and do not have a valid biometric passport can enter in transit through Romania, and from there to Ukraine (directly or through Moldova). You can return to Ukraine with the documents you came to Bulgaria with (for example, an internal passport or birth certificate, etc.). But in this case, please take into account the peculiarity that transit involves a stay in the country for no more than 72 hours.
